While much of today's collectible design relies on global production networks, Eva Menz has built Atelier001 around a different approach. From her London studio, the German-born lighting designer oversees every stage of the process, from concept and prototyping to manufacture and finishing, working closely with a long-term local production partner. The hands-on model allows designs to evolve organically, with refinements made throughout production.
This craftsmanship is evident in the Cosmic Carousel chandelier, whose hand-spun brass shades are individually lacquered, giving each piece subtle variations that industrial manufacturing cannot replicate. Concealed LEDs bounce light off the shades rather than projecting it directly,
reflecting Menz's belief that atmosphere comes from the way light interacts with surfaces rather than the source itself.
The chandelier's floating, orbital composition hints at celestial movement without directly imitating it, creating a sense of rhythm and quiet dynamism. Menz, who previously designed large-scale architectural commissions, says the piece demonstrates that emotional impact does not depend on scale. Instead, it is the careful attention to materials, finish and handcrafted details that encourages lasting appreciation and gives the object its distinctive character.
